2018 Festival StewardsWe are an all-volunteer fest, supporting the Orlando comedy scene.
The Orlando Indie Comedy Fest was started in 2014 by Tom, Matt, Dave, Doug and Nick with the intention to create a non-profit festival run by comics. Independent of any mainstream venues or large corporate underwriters, they wanted to bring great young comedians from around the country to perform in Orlando while showcasing the local comedy scene.
Today, the fest is run by the Festival Stewards, the all-volunteer organizing team above.
Each year, we donate a large portion of the festival's profits to help fund mental illness awareness and treatment. We make it a point to show our support and not to advocate hateful language against mental illness, race, or gender. But above all else, we put comics first. We strive to produce a four-day, kick-ass fest that comics and audiences will remember for the rest of their lives. Our mission is to support and build a strong and supportive city for great comedy.
The Great Gersting
On April 19, 2016, we lost our best friend and the leader of the Orlando Indie Comedy Fest, Matt Gersting.
Over the course of his time in Orlando, Matt had become an outsized and relentlessly positive influence the city's art scene. Be it music, tech, or comedy, everything he invested himself in left a lasting impact. He was an intellectual, a song-and-dance man with a charm and wit that could make you blush. A drinking buddy with an encyclopedic knowledge of Cheers that he'd flaunt at the pub over his favorite Neutral Milk Hotel songs. Strangers became friends when they discovered Matt was someone they knew in common.
Today, the festival has become something greater. Not only is it an opportunity to bring Orlando together as a community, it is also a celebration of Matt. Without his love and dedication, this fest wouldn't have happened. But here we are for another year because of it.
To quote Matt, quoting Wilson Phillips, "Hold on for one more day."
Thank you for honoring his memory with us.
