2017 Festival StewardsWe are an all-volunteer fest, supporting the Orlando comedy scene.
In Memory of Matt Gersting
2016 has been a particularly terrible year. Few cities felt the pain as deeply as our own Central Florida family.
On April 19, 2016, we lost our dear friend and the leader of the Orlando Indie Comedy Fest, Matt Gersting.
Before he left us at age 35, Matt had become an outsized and relentlessly positive influence on Orlando’s music, art, technology, and comedy communities, to name only a few. He could make you laugh and he could make you sing. Strangers became friends when they discovered Matt was someone they knew in common.
Sometimes he closed his sets by singing “Hold On for One More Day” and he meant it. He got big laughs and his comedy was smart and sincere.
Matt would never see the Pulse tragedy that shook our city on June 12, 2016, an event that has emboldened us to act with even more love and kindness toward one another. Matt believed in ideals like access to mental health care, and the destigmatization of mental illness, the causes that our fest continues to fund.
Today, our city needs this festival more than Matt could have ever imagined. To those who knew him, it may seem fitting that Matt Gersting started something that keeps Orlando laughing, even long after he has left the stage.
Thank you for honoring Matt’s memory with us.
